About Sylvain Reynard

I'm interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition - particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. My favourite stories are those in which a character takes a journey, either a physical journey to a new and exciting place, or a personal journey in which he or she learns something about himself/herself.

I'm also interested in how aesthetic elements such as art, architecture, and music can be used to tell a story or to illuminate the traits of a particular character. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness.

I try to use my platform as an author to raise awareness about the following charities: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation, WorldVision, Alex's Lemonade Stand, and Covenant House. For more information, see my Twitter account.

  1. I just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you support so many worthy charities. I work for St. Jude and it's people like you who freely give that makes such good work possible for those in need. Your benevolent spirit is an inspiration. Thank you.

  2. Bravo! I wanted to congratulate you on your new "seven figure" book deal. I absolutely love this story's plot, characters and their growth. Your story had me doing something I hadn't done since the movie "Braveheart" -- actually researching Dante's Inferno and learning something new. Thank you for opening my eyes to a whole new world.

  7. So happy to hear that a third book is coming out. My heart is already beating to a "Sylvain Reynard cadence"~ I will simply continue to indulge in re-reading Gabriel's Inferno and Rapture over and over again until we're graced with his third literature wonder~

  8. I don't believe I have ever cried so hard as I did in Gabriel's Rapture. I can't wait to finish the book, but I don't want to leave the characters. I find myself wanting to reread "Divine Comedy", since I read it last as an undergraduate many years ago. You are a gifted writer and your characters have many dimensions. Thank you for the books. I can't wait for the third. In the meantime I will reread the other two.

    1. When I read your post that you are on your 4th re-read, I can truly relate. I really lost count how many times I have re-read these books. I really love the characters and with the third book pending, I can't wait to find out what happened to Paul. I really felt for him and do hope he found someone that loves him like he deserves.

I also concur that Mr. Sylvain has a wonderful talent in story telling. I do hope that everyone will find their Gabriel and Julia!

  12. Mr. Reynard,
I have just recently started reading books, I enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey, however your books were so much more of a love story, and the knowledge I now have of Italian art makes me want to go to Italy and study them in further detail. Thank you so much for writing them and Iam greatly awaiting your 3rd book next year.

The music you use seem to go so well with the words Thank you for your beautiful books anfor making this grandma happy..

    1. I must say I agree entirely with Jen the angel... I read both Inferno and Rapture within a 36 hour period (yes I am tired :) and also really appreciated how you wove literature, faith and love together to make a holy trinity within the story line... can't wait for #3!!!

I went to college on Spadina and lived on Madison so it was an extra treat to accompany Julia and Gabriel around my old stomping grounds!!!

I also found them more entrancing and with much more depth and more compassionately written than the 50 series. Please keep up the great writing.

Gracias...

  19. Mabuhay ka Sylvain Reynard! When I started reading Gabriel's Inferno, I was hooked and totally mesmerized. I just can't put the book down. I had to read the 2nd book after I read the 1st one. So definitely waiting for the 3rd book.

Because of your book, I rediscovered my love for literature, art and classical music. Great writing! It truly moved me.

    Thank you so much!

  20. Sylvain Reynard you are truly amazing! please continue sharing your gift to us... to me.. your avid fan/reader!

i was so captivated the first time I lay my hand on Gabriel's Inferno (no wonder I keep on rereading it up to this moment) and was totally lost under Professor Emerson's spell. And so I can’t contain my excitement to continue with Gabriel’s Rapture which is more exciting… Gabriel’s Proposal in the orchard touch my heart so deeply that my tear ducts can’t restrain… it’s been so long since I cried over a book… it was absolutely well written! Im in love with your books. So I guess you can imagine my anticipation to drag December closer for me to get hold of Gabriel’s Redemption… please do continue to make us happy through your writings…

Good Luck & God Bless! :)

P.S. Florence, Italy will definitely be on my bucket list. #inspired

    thank you!

  22. Dear Mr. Reynard, I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!!! I Came upon your books by accident on Facebook, when my favorite actor (Henry Cavill) was mentioned as the perfect Professor Emerson. I went online and found and ordered your books. As soon as, i started to read, i couldn't put it down. I found it beautifully romantic, heatbreaking and loved every moment of it. After reading the second book, I was even more in love than before. I was surprised to learn that a man had written them because i never knew a man could write something sssoooo romantic and beautiful. You took my imagination to Florence and places i never in my life, thought i would have ever known about. THANK YOU!!! I can't wait for Gabriel's Redemption, December can't come fast enough. I look forward to reading many more books from you. You are amazing author.

Non vedo l'ora che in Italia si spiccino a pubblicare il secondo libro! ;D

  29. Dear SR, I want to say that as much as I LOVED the tow books and can't wait for December for the third, I want to tell you what they meant to me. At 51 I have never even heard of Dante until last year when I read the books. It's not that wasn't a smart student, but I had a learning disability, that , at that time was not recognized. It wasn't until I was almost 20 that I discovered the pleasure and escape that was reading. I love my life, but sometimes I wish that I could go back just so I could enjoy school and learn all of the things that I hated, for obvious reasons. I, as an adult, have come to love culture, history, antiques, and most of all, reading. It takes me to places that I have never been and probably will never be able to go. Thanks to writers like you I can see them in my mind and in my heart so clearly, it's as if I were there. It is surprising that as a man you can share the intimacies of love the way you do, because most men are unable to understand women's needs and wants the way you seem to be able to. Thank you for writing this series. I have read Fifty Shades and the Crossfire series and Gabriel is my favorite of all.

  30. I just can't understand how many people dare to compare your books to the others of the gender that got so much attention, that i wont name, Your books are so MUCH SUPERIOR in history, trama, they have meaning , and so captivating, that I, who knew nothing about Italian culture and the history of Dante and Beatrice , am soo in love with them,
You deserve EVERY congrats and every prize. Love you.

I support Covenant House in NY and was happy to see you support the one in Toronto. It's such a great organization. Keep writing. Keep Reading. Keep continuing to fulfill your every desire. ~ Sheila (Geneseo, NY) (p.s.just finished Audio version of Gabriel's Inferno....LOVED IT. The Snarky Narrator is perfect.)

  32. I cannot express how much I have enjoyed both Inferno and Rapture! I read quite a few books each year but I regularly come back to these two to get my Gabriel and Julianne fix! I am so looking forward to Redemption as I feel I am going to have a visit with some very good friends. I have recommended these books often and no one has been disappointed! Thank you for sharing your talent.

  33. I am the type of person who must read a book in its entirety in one sitting otherwise I lose the book's 'rythym'. I was captivated by Gabriel's Inferno the first time I read it. On this rare occasion, I was able to put the book down and pick it up the next day; that's how engrossed in the story I was. I have now read the book three times and each time, I discover something new about the storyline that gives me an 'Ah-ha' moment. I recently picked up Gabriel's Rapture (I didn't know it was out yet) at Barnes and Noble. I sat down after work last night and started reading the book. Normally, I would'n do this for fear of losing the book's 'rythm'. I knew, because of the author, I would not lose the 'rythm' if I split the book into two nights. As I sit here typing this, I am eager to go home and finish the last 150 pages...counting down the hours, almost tempted to fake an illness so I could go home early. I cried like a baby while reading Gabriel's Rapture. I could not go to my bed unless I got past a certain point in the book that would give me an indication that the two characters would most likely be alright. I went to my bed at 3am when I had to awake at 6am. I am so impressed by the two books I want to read them over and over until there is nothing new to discover. I have no idea how I am going to wait for the third book. Additionally, I performed an internet search on the author today. I had no idea that Sylvain Reynard was a man! The entire time I was reading the books, I assumed the author was a woman; I read the book from a woman's persective. I mean, who but a woman, could write the beautiful, sexy and sentimental storyline? Don't get me started on the actual quotes! Tonight, when I read the conclusion of Gabriel's Rapture, I think I will read it a bit differently. If a man can write such romantic words and gestures, it gives me hope as a woman that I can find a man that will treat me like a princess. Bravo Mr. Reynard! Please keep the books coming!

You are an amazing person, don´t forget that. I{m proud of you...

  36. I find your books by accident and what a happy accident. I'm about to start reading them again for the third time in 4 weeks, and can't wait for the new book. To say that they have became my drug, would be a understatement.... What you can do with a pen and paper Mr Reynard is amazing.
I have ever read Dante, but plan to do just that, I remember seeing a lot of the painting you talk about in the books when I was in Italy, and always loved them. But you have them new light and colour , me a better understanding and love for them.
I have loved the story line you have taken and given depth the relationships with family, friends etc...But for me it has always been about the relationship between Gabriel and Julia in and out of the bedroom and not so much the sex on the page ( yes that is amazing ) you have managed to give them a depth that has allowed them the show their souls to each other, leaving them naked, skin left open, exposed with its lines on show, disappear , pain and love. Like a onion with layer, after layer removed, sometimes with layers are paper thin ones so transparent that they can see through the pain to reach the sweetness of strength of finding each other. I have cried many tears over the past 4 weeks, for Gabriel and Julia, and myself remembering what it is like to love that much. If I could put their love into a song it would Joni Mitchell’s ” A Case of You ” I can never hear that song without crying because its that what love is about touching soul, so bitter, so sweet, a constant light for we are lonely painters with our box of paint wait for someone to give colour to the grey lines of our lives…..To find our "sticky things " and hopefully find ourselves along the way.

    1. Starting to read Gabriel's story again for the 4th time, and the tears following again. Remembering the pain, sorrow and joy that comes with the turn of every page. Some how the my music playlist , "Gabriel"playlist as I call it, seem to tell the story to me in music. Music like words on page can, open the mind and heart to pain and sorrow so deep, naked to the eye and that even time can't ever heal. I so get the pain that Gabriel felt over the lost of MAIA, that pain ever really leaves you. There is ever anyone the blame, so we blame ourselves. It takes me back to many years again and the pain I felt and will always feel at the loss of my unborn baby girl. Their maybe no headstone to make her little body, that lies in the little park of "lost baby" of the hospital. I drive past that park most days and from time to time I see her with her beautiful little copper/red curly hair and green eyes dancing and laugh with childish joy it makes my heart sing. I know that she is somewhere dancing on clouds with all the baby angels and always know that she is been loved, teased and looked over by my grandfather who was my first great love. One song on my playlist that makes me think of lost babies, MAIA and also Julia when she first meet Gabriel in the orchard is "Bella" by Angus and Julia Stone, it has a childish beauty about it that is so beautiful. And love, love , cried tear "LOVESONG" by Adele or Gabriel's song as I now call it....

Pain, sorrow, joy and love in music " Gabriel's Playlist" :

      LOVESONG - Adele
BELLA - Angus and Julia Stone

      CHASING PAVEMENTS - Adele

MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE - Adele

BABYLON - Angus and Julia Stone

  37. Even if i'm french and if i don't speak very well English i'll try to tell you all my support in English language. Sometime i tell you my support on twitter but it's fade and short i can't tell all what i'm thinking about you and your stories.

I Love your writing and when i read your books i always feel something that i don't feel in another books, there is something dark and sad in your writing but also something beautiful and happy at the same time. your story about Gabriel Series is touching because she has that romantic side a little bit old school sometimes but magic though, and we feel all that deep side all the love, suffering, hope. Gabriel, He's so impressive because he has that dark side and we feel that, and at the same time he's so kind, so polite, generous, sensitiv it's so strange all those contrasts . I think it's not as easy to write something good but also with that intensity and they aren't a lot of writer who write like you. And i think maybe there's something deeper in your life or past as a writer and person maybe a personal experience who makes your writing better i don't know because the way you write your stories, what we feel in them it's rare and special, i don't know how explain but there's something special in them it's not just a love story, we really feel emotions like if they're touching something deep in ourself. So i wanna say thank you because you're a talented writer but also a beautiful person. And through the fiction we feel that. I feel that in any case. it's so hard to explain myself in english and i don't know if it makes sense what i'm saying :/ but thank you. When i read Gabriel Series i m in another world, and it touches a lot of emotion inside of me. I admire the writer i admire the person behind the writer i admire the story and there should be more people like you.
